An opioid partial agonist used to treat opioid use disorder and, increasingly, as a complementary treatment alongside other interventions.

Example: A 2026 Stanford-led randomized trial found that four weeks of low-dose buprenorphine after a single ketamine infusion produced a 76% reduction in suicidal ideation, versus 43% for ketamine plus placebo — the first drug combination shown to extend ketamine's antisuicidal effect this way.
