Peptides — short chains of amino acids that act as signals in the body — have become one of the loudest categories in human wellness. That noise is now reaching pet owners, with online vendors marketing "peptides for pets" for everything from joint injuries to gut health.
The confusing part is that peptides are genuinely useful in feline medicine. Some are approved, well-studied, and standard care. Others are being sold with no controlled evidence in cats at all. The two are easy to conflate, and the marketing rarely helps.
Peptides Are Already Standard Feline Medicine
This is the part that gets lost: your vet may already be prescribing a peptide.
- Insulin — the best example. Insulin is a peptide hormone, and it is the foundation of treatment for feline diabetes mellitus. ProZinc, a protamine zinc recombinant human insulin, was FDA-approved for cats in October 2009 and remains a first-line option.
- Deslorelin — a synthetic analogue of gonadotropin-releasing hormone, delivered as a slow-release implant (Suprelorin). It is licensed for dogs in a number of countries and used off-label in cats, where studies published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery have reported effective, reversible suppression of sexual activity lasting roughly two years, with wide individual variation.
- Cosyntropin and desmopressin — synthetic peptide analogues used in feline diagnostics and in treating specific endocrine conditions.
Worth a footnote: capromorelin (Elura), FDA-approved in October 2020 for managing weight loss in cats with chronic kidney disease, is often lumped in with peptides. It is a ghrelin receptor agonist — it mimics a peptide hormone's signal, but it is a small molecule, not a peptide itself. In field studies cats gained about 5% body weight over eight weeks, with vomiting and hypersalivation the most common side effects.
The pattern across all of these: a specific compound, a specific condition, a dose established in trials, and veterinary supervision.
The Peptide That Made Cats Famous
The most-studied cat-related peptide was never meant for cats at all. Fel d 1 is the protein cats produce in their saliva and skin that causes most human cat allergies, and for years it looked like a solvable problem.
The biotech firm Circassia developed Cat-PAD, a synthetic peptide immunotherapy using short fragments of Fel d 1, designed to retrain the immune system without triggering a full allergic response. Phase 2 results were encouraging. The Phase 3 trial enrolled 1,245 patients across more than 100 centres in North America, Europe and Russia.
In June 2016, it failed. The peptide treatment did not reduce allergy symptoms better than placebo — not because it made people worse, but because the placebo group improved just as much. The treatment was well tolerated throughout, which is the point worth carrying forward: a peptide can be perfectly safe and still not work.
The Unregulated Side
Running alongside all of this is a market selling research-grade peptides — most often BPC-157 and TB-500 — for injury recovery and inflammation in dogs, cats and horses.
What the evidence actually shows:
- No controlled trials in cats. Peer-reviewed randomised controlled studies of BPC-157 or TB-500 in companion animals are essentially absent. Claims about healing tendons or guts in pets are extrapolated from rodent research, not demonstrated in cats.
- No approval, human or veterinary. BPC-157 is not FDA-approved for any use in any species. In late 2023 the FDA placed it in Category 2 of its compounding review — substances presenting significant safety risks — citing immune reactions, peptide impurities and insufficient safety data.
- Unverified purity. Products sold as "research chemicals" sit outside veterinary drug oversight. Concentration and contamination vary between vendors, and a cat's body mass leaves very little margin for a dosing error.
One recent development is being read as validation, and shouldn't be. On 23 July 2026, the FDA's Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee voted — narrowly, and over the objections of the agency's own career scientists — to recommend adding BPC-157, KPV, TB-500 and MOTS-c to the list of substances compounding pharmacies may use. Several votes were decided by a single member.
That recommendation is not an approval. It concerns human compounding pharmacies, not veterinary medicine, the FDA is not obliged to adopt it, and any change would still have to go through rulemaking. Nothing about it establishes that these compounds are safe or effective in cats.
What to Ask Your Vet
If you're considering a peptide for your cat, or you've been recommended one:
- Ask whether the compound is approved for cats, approved for another species and used off-label, or not approved at all — and where the dosing figure comes from.
- Ask what the evidence is in cats specifically, not in rats or in humans.
- Ask who compounds or supplies it, and whether purity is verified.
- Be direct about why it's being suggested. A peptide for a diagnosed endocrine condition is a different proposition from one for vague "vitality" or "recovery".
- Raise any supplement or peptide you're already giving. Interactions with prescribed medication are a real risk, and cats metabolise many compounds differently from dogs and humans.
A cat with diabetes or chronic kidney disease may well end up on a peptide-based therapy, prescribed and monitored — that is ordinary, evidence-backed veterinary medicine. It is a genuinely different thing from an unregulated vial ordered online.
